Strength in Numbers: Nancy Kelly and Her Team of 40 Ran for Son at Terry Fox 2017

In 2006, seventeen-year old Christopher Kelly was diagnosed with osteosarcoma—the same cancer that took Terry Fox’s life. Ever since Christopher’s death in 2009, his mother, Nancy, along with approximately forty of Christopher’s friends and family have not missed the annual Terry Fox Run. Team Kelly is made up of extended family, friends, children, and dogs. The team only gets bigger each year.

84-year-old Verla Fiveash talks cancer prevention, the loss of her son and being a community leader

Verla Fiveash, 84, has been a community leader for as long as she can remember. She has been a Scarborough resident since 1969 and has grown quite attached to her tight-knit community. Fiveash has been an organizer and volunteer for over 30 years and this year’s 36th annual Terry Fox Run at Cedar Brook Park was no exception. Fiveash lost her son to colon cancer in February, 2017. He was 57 years old.

Thornhill Terry Fox Run organizer Blaine Sikich inspired at an impressionable age

Blaine Sikich was at an impressionable age when he first heard of Terry Fox’s run across Canada. Like the rest of the country, Sikich was saddened and touched when Fox’s life ended. But Sikich was also inspired to organize his very first Terry Fox Run, at the time using the dirt field behind his public school. Ever since then the Thornhill man has been involved one way or another.
